Gatka recognition : traditional art to global sport

Gatka is rapidly gaining formal recognition as a modern competitive sport. This journey from a revered cultural tradition to a structured athletic discipline is a testament to its growing appeal and the dedicated efforts of governing bodies worldwide like World Gatka Federation (WGF), Asian Gatka Federation (AGF), National Gatka Association of India (NGAI), International Sikh Martial Art Council (ISMAC) and Commonwealth Gatka Federation (CGF).

Levels of recognition

The recognition of Gatka can be viewed at three key levels:

1. Recognition in India (The foundation): The most significant milestone is its official recognition by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS), Government of India. It had included Gatka as a ‘Discipline of Indigenous Games & Martial Arts’ in Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG). Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had also included Gatka sport in the National Games.

In addition to this, the Pythian Council of India has introduced this game in its annual National Pythian Cultural Games. Moreover, the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) had incorporated Gatka sport in its National University Games Calendar. Besides this the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) had introduced this game in the National School Games. These initiatives have granted Gatka a national status, enabling:

· Access to government funding and support.

· Inclusion in official national sports calendars and events.

· Formal recognition of players as athletes and coaches as certified professionals.

2. Continental recognition : This is where the AGF and CGF will play their pivotal roles. Continental recognition involves:

· Establishing a unified governing bodies (AGF and CGF) to oversee the sport’s development across Asia and Commonwealth countries.

· Organizing premier continental events, such as the Asian Gatka Championship and Commonwealth Gatka Championship will showcase popularity of Gatka in the Continents thereby paving the way for recognition of Gatka by the Olympic Council of Asia and in various Asian countries.

3. International recognition (Global goal): The ultimate aim, led by the World Gatka Federation (WGF), is global acceptance. Key steps include:

· The WGF provides the international framework that continental bodies like the AGF and CGF align with.

· The goal is recognition by international sporting bodies, which will pave the way for Gatka’s potential inclusion in major multi-sport events in coming years.

Role of AGF

The AGF is the central force driving Gatka’s recognition across Asia. Its work, in collaboration with national bodies, ensures the sport is developed with professionalism and integrity. The AGF’s initiatives, such as referee and coach certification programs and the organization of continental championships, are crucial for meeting the standards required for higher levels of recognition.

Future is bright

The recognition of Gatka is a powerful movement that honors its rich heritage while securing its future. It transforms Gatka from a cultural demonstration into a symbol of athletic excellence, discipline and inclusivity for a new generation across Asia and the world.
